There are two types of auditions in the entertainment industry: closed auditions and open auditions. Closed auditions are announced when a role is cast requiring a certain age, appearance, ethnicity, height or overall look. The audition information is distributed to agencies, agents and management companies who send talent fitting the part. Closed auditions usually attract many auditioners with similar size and physical appearance, unlike open auditions which are open to all interested.
Anyone can try out at open auditions, with or without an agent. Performers with little or no acting experience are always encouraged to attend open auditions. Open auditions are good opportunities for new talent to get noticed by casting directors and possibly land a paying part in a film or stage production on their first attempt.
Open movie auditions also have some built-in disadvantages because time is limited and the individual auditions are run through very quickly. If the open audition doesn’t lead to work right away, making a good impression with the casting directors could lead to work in the future. Another good feature of open auditions is that they can provide a lot of auditioning practice in a short time. You will waste less time and get more accomplished if you are focused and realistic about attending all the open auditions you can find. It is a good idea to apply for every local play and stage production holding open auditions. Any role can help you learn more about the craft. The more well rounded you are in all aspects of performance and production, the better you will perform at open auditions.
