All actors at music auditions have to demonstrate their vocal abilities even if they are not auditioning for a lead role. Your voice will be judged on suitability for every singing role, even if it is just a position in the chorus. The tough part is convincing the directors of your ability in an extremely short time. Music auditions usually give actors only about 30 seconds, or 16 bars to sing. In that 30 seconds you must convince the directors you are the best choice for the role. It is not an easy proposition but the music audition process can be made a bit easier with some preparation tips.
One thing you can do to prepare for a music audition is to find out who wrote the music for the show you are auditioning for. Once you know who the composer is you can find other music by the same person and prepare a selection from their work that will be similar to the actual music in the show. This shows the directors you have done your homework and can sing similar compositions. Having selected the piece you are going to sing you need to find 16 bars that represent the whole piece best. If you start at the very beginning of the composition your music audition will likely be over before you can get into the heart of song performance. It is better to select the best 30 seconds of the tune wherever they are found.
Remember to warm up your vocal chords prior to the music audition. Sing in the morning and sing on the way to the music audition. Drink lots of water before the music audition. You want to be as hydrated as possible to prevent a dry throat at the music audition. Be sure to bring your own water to the music audition as well. Following these simple steps can go a long way to making the most of your music audition.
