There are two types of auditions: closed auditions and open auditions. A closed audition is when a role or part is being cast requiring a certain age, appearance, ethnicity, height or overall look. The audition information is sent to agencies that send actors fitting the part. Closed auditions can attract many hopeful candidates with a similar size and physical appearance, unlike open auditions that are open to anyone.
Anyone can try out at open auditions even if they don’t have an agent. It is common for performers with very little experience to attend open auditions. An open audition is a good opportunity for inexperienced new talent without agents to get noticed by directors and maybe even get referred to a good agent.
Stage time is limited and good impressions must be made quickly at an open audition. Even if the audition doesn’t lead to work right away, making a good impression could always lead to paying work in the future. Open auditions can provide a lot of audition practice in a short time. Audition candidates with some training in their field will usually do better than inexperienced beginners, but it is important for all to make the most of every audition regardless of their skill level. You will waste less time and get more accomplished if you are focused and realistic about attending all the movie auditions you possibly can.
